Pavement
management as defined by AASHTO is a coordinated systematic process
for carrying out all activities related to pavements.
| A
pavement management system consists of three major components: |
| • |
A system
to regularly collect pavement conditions |
| • |
A database
to sort and store the collected data |
| • |
An analysis
program to evaluate repair or preservation strategies and
suggest cost-effective projects to maintain pavement conditions |
The analysis
of a pavement system includes predicting how long a pavement will
last with a certain kind of repair under a given load, climate,
and other factors. The analysis will also predict annual repair
costs, overall pavement performance, and expected pavement conditions.
